The brief ask; Write an essay of 1000 words on an image of your choice.
The brief suggests either to choose:
- A well-known photograph – taking time to research it context, intentions of the photographer, etc. Using all of this research as well as your own interpretation,
- A found photograph – try to avoid telling the moment, and more look at the information within it, comparing your memory of the moment and what new things you are seeing from looking at it afresh.
I have decided to choose a known photograph, as I feel I will be able to do more in-depth research, and be able to compare both the photographers intentions and m own interpretation of the information within the photograph.
The photograph I have decided to choose is an image of the Queen with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, that was recently taken as part of a series by Annie Leibovitz to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations.
A Leibovitz is a famous photographer, who has taken many celebrity endorsed photographs, I think this will make the background research into the photographer sufficient. Also on first impressions of the image, there is a lot of contextual studying that can be achieved with this photograph.
